Straw lids exist because some drinks cannot be sipped from an opening. A smoothie is too viscous, a boba tea carries pearls that need a 10 to 12 millimeter channel, and an iced drink full of ice cubes flows unpredictably through a narrow spout.

Straw diameter is its own decision, and it matters more than people expect. A standard 6 to 8 millimeter straw handles juice and iced coffee.
